Germany predicted a sharp increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus

BERLIN: In the near future, a sharp increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus is expected in Germany. At the same time, hospitals and medical laboratories will work at the limit of their capabilities. This was stated by the Minister of Health of Germany Karl Lauterbach, his words are quoted by The Berlin Spectactor.

The official noted that the restrictions imposed in Germany in December really helped slow the spread of the virus, Deutsche Welle notes. He also emphasized that his goal is to “turn a steep wall with the number of infected into a hill or not be so high.”

Lauterbach predicted that restrictions and vaccinations could slow the spread of the virus. The Minister of Health assured that only this will help reduce the number of infected people and reduce the burden on medicine.

The head of the department ruled out the possibility that Germany will ease the existing restrictions in the near future. Lauterbach added that in the event of a sharp increase in the number of infected people and, as a result, an increased burden on the country's healthcare system, additional measures may be required.

Earlier in January, against the backdrop of a rapid increase in the number of people infected with a new omicron strain, Germany adopted new rules for attending public events. Now residents of the country must present a negative test for COVID-19 or a certificate of booster vaccination, as well as be vaccinated or recovered in order to enter catering establishments.

In December 2021, Lauterbach argued that the world was unlikely to beat the coronavirus in the coming years. The head of the German Ministry of Health also spoke in favor of universal vaccination and stressed that the severity of restrictions in the country depends on the pace of the vaccination campaign.
