BERLIN: The European Commission said that Ukraine may lose the status of an EU candidate. This will happen if the country does not fulfill a number of conditions.
The EC issued a ruling on Ukraine's application to the EU, in which it listed the conditions. Failure to comply with them gives the right to revoke the country's candidate status. This is stated in the text of the resolution dated June 17.
It is reported that the European Commission will monitor Ukraine's progress in meeting the requirements and will report on them along with the assessment of the country by the end of 2022.
"The accession process is still based on established criteria and conditions. This allows any country participating in the process to progress based on its own achievements," the resolution says.
This also means that "the EU candidate status can be canceled if the basic conditions are not met."
In order to retain the opportunity to become a member of the European Union, Ukraine is recommended to carry out a block of reforms. We are talking about judicial reform of the Constitutional Court, the introduction of laws that prevent corruption, oligarchy and money laundering, as well as changing the legislation on national minorities and harmonizing the media law with the EU directive on audiovisual media services.
