Two of Serie A's top four will lock horns at Stadio Olimpico AS Roma host second-placed AC Milan.
The Portuguese manager, who won the treble with Inter Milan in his first spell in the Italian top-flight, saw his 43-game unbeaten streak broken by a spirited Milan side. Following the victory in the capital, Stefano Pioli's men returned to to the top of the table level with Napoli at 31 points. The Rossoneri also continued their unbeaten run in the league with their 10th win in 11 games.
The home side started the game on a bright note with Lorenzo Pellegrini coming close to give Roma the lead inside the first 10 minutes but his right-footed effort whizzed wide from eight yards out.
Frank Kessie's thunderous drive from the edge of the box went just wide two minutes later as Milan responded almost immediately after Roma's first attack.
The visitors gradually grew into the game and took control of the possession as Roma struggled to get hold of the ball against the high-intensity running of Milan players.
The game overflowed with a lot of attacking intent from both sides but Milan deservedly went in front on 25 minutes.
Rafael Leao was brought down right on the edge of the box by Dutch defender Rick Karsdorp who got into the referee's book for the clumsy challenge.
The positioning of the free-kick felt like Zlatan Ibrahimovic's marked territory as the tall Swede stood over the ball with hungry eyes for the goal.
The 40-year-old striker drilled a low free-kick into the bottom corner to bring up his 150th goal in Serie A and 400th goal in domestic leagues.
Milan thought they doubled their lead a few minutes later when Rafel Leao flicked it over Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio and headed into the empty net but it was correctly ruled out.
Roma were unable to match the intensity of their old rivals and went into the break with a goal down.
Ibrahimovic continued to torment the home side and put the ball into the net for the second time with a superb finish but VAR ruled it offside.
The former Manchester United and Barcelona striker was in the thick of the things yet again. Roger Ibanez's desperate challenge to stop Ibrahimovic from talking a shot into the goal was deemed illegal as Milan were awarded a penalty that Franck Kessie converted in the 57th minute.
The visiting side was reduced to 10 men for the final 25 minutes after French left-back Theo Hernandez was shown the second yellow card for bringing down Pellegrini on the edge of the box.
However, Stephan El Shaarawy's strike in the added time proved too little too late for Roma who suffered their fourth loss of the season.
