BERLIN: German President Frank-Walter SteinmeierIn a statement in the capital, Berlin, he stated that no one could remain indifferent to the images in Kabul and the developments in Afghanistan.
“The images of desperation at the Kabul airport are embarrassing for Western politics,” said Steinmeier, adding that Germany now needs to evacuate its citizens from Afghanistan and Afghans helping Germany.
Stating that the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban’s takeover of the country without resistance will have lasting effects in the future, Steinmeier stated that the failure of years of efforts in Afghanistan raises “basic questions”.
President Steinmeier noted that these questions should be answered honestly, not quickly.
